I finally feel like I understand it well enough to give an adequate summary.

I found that people choose specific locations around Barcelona for the same reason that they do anywhere else in the world, which is because certain places give a higher amount of money then others. Next, there is more homeless culture that is Middle East because they have seem to move across all of Europe working together as a large group and they seem to be doing well. Third people respond more generously to those that sit there and put on a sad, hopeless face because it makes you feel pity for them and want to offer them more money.

You will find that the true homeless people will be with their stuff at all time and those that you see repeatedly over time getting worse or dirtier. Those that do have all there stuff with them you will notice that they sleep down closer to the water front in doorways and under covered overhangs of buildings away from people that might bother them. I finally figured out that the people looking though the trash are actually not homeless people, but they are just common people that are looking to get anything useful out of it to use or to sell to make money. Finally, the things that I have noticed people taking out of the trash the most are furniture pieces and used clothing.

It has been an amazing time focusing my extra studies on this topic because I feel I have grown with understanding and love for those that are actually homeless and what they have to go through. It is something that most people can’t even imagine having to do to simply survive. I will always be praying for them. His father worked alongside the famous Antonio Gaudi and the continuous progress on the Sagrada Familia is in his blood. We learned about how his design for a majority of the building was based off of his study of a parabola. This understanding of a parabola came into the building through the need for light in the space, so the ceilings where designed with these different sized parabolas and were they create an awkward space between them is where he placed his twisted column. When it even comes to the children’s school right out front he implemented the design of the parabolic shape. As we entered the restricted area for workers only, we were presented with special visitor badges and hard hats, I felt very official and “V.I.P.” in the words of Hawra. We were able to go up on to the high catwalks and thanks to EJ we got nice souvenir of pieces of rebar and building tiles, which will be going into a trophy case and put up high in my room saying, “Tile form the Sagrada Familia…..the reason why it might fall”. It’s crazy to think that this building is only 60% done and the tallest part is yet to start its high climb into the sky. After an amazing tour and a quick goodbye we were off to tackle the rest of our days.

I am having an amazing time, but I find myself missing home more and more everyday; till I finally see my beautiful niece, Isabella, and see my family and good friends. I have loved Barcelona and will being coming back very soon, but I feel home is calling!

Secrets of the Homeless

Well a lot has changed since i first came to Barcelona. First there was culture shock, then sympathy for the homeless, then an interest in them and now I want to get deep into the understanding. Today i had a long talk with Hawra about how hard it is to tell if someone is homeless or not and it has been bothering me for a while now. I remember hearing a statistic from Washington DC, some people that pose as homeless culture are not and could be making as much as $80,000 a year.

There is a large arabic homeless culture in Europe that i have noticed while touring it on my free time. They all know each other and they have very set locations and signs that i have noticed are new almost every day or week. While in Fes someone said something very important..."if you are to give money to the homeless give it to the people that are not bothering you for it. It's the ones that are just sitting there." I realized that when you see these arabic homeless "women", which is interesting because they are all women, no men, they dont have anything with them. You would think that they would have there own personal things with them because they don't have anywhere to leave it. They also bring there children with them and try to play the sympathy card i feel. Well i have stopped giving money to them because im afraid im not helping the people that really need it.

I only have 3 weeks left in Barcelona, but im hoping that i will be able to finally answer all my questions that i proposed in one of the very first weeks here. Im finding it hard to communicated with the local homeless people but i will do my best to dig up the dirt.

Final thought for the night....I once thought that it was the homeless culture that were searching through the garbage looking for anything they could find, but it is very clear that people actually do this regularly to find things to sell or for themselves. Very interesting to see.

Taking Over Paris (Pictures)

Paris

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; This is a very complex question in that it takes a lot of different aspects. One of many is closely related to Casa Batllo and i discovered before even finding it, I was right by the building yet it took me 45 minutes of walking around to find it. After finding the building i wondered how I never found it in a matter of seconds. Its close resemblance to a reptile skin for a facade and a reptilian spine and tail for a rooftop makes this a piece of art and architecture. The typical winding cast iron railings and close look to detail makes this a must see in Barcelona and in my personal achieve.

Casa Mila
As this building sits on the corner of one of the most populated streets in Barcelona it has its road to fame pre-paved. Its facade is like an inconsistent winding sting. Its Gaudi typical columns come down to the street creating a very none usable but creative space nun-the-less. It has a very interesting rooftop that can be seen slightly from the ground which makes you want to travel to the top. Also, as you walk the streets around you get little glimpses of what kind of amazing interior it hold.

Casa Calvet
This was a building that I never had seen or heard about before. But right away i saw the Gaudi design in the railing work and exceptional design of little detail. Its front facade reminds me of a very simple version of the Casa Batllo and that is probably why nobody was stopping by it to look at it in detail or take pictures.

Casa Comalat
This design is a very typical residential housing, with the punched out porches with the combination of the Gaudi railings. Very simple yet very complex in tiny detail.

Casa Vincens
Casa Vincens is one of Antonio Gaudi's most unorthodox designs. His typical design are those of Casa Mila and Casa Batllo yet looking at this one it is completely different except for a few small Gaudi details and his focus to detail. The building reminds me of a house built out of Lego's because of the amazing tile work on the up half of the house with the lower part consisting of mainly masonry work. Its surrounding gate has a similar design to that of a tropical tree

Parc Guell
This was an adventure and a half to get all the way to the northern parts of Barcelona to find this Parc which is built on to the side of the mountain. Consisting of several structures and buildings with the typical Gaudi-esk look. The parc has multiple level through it giving you a more magnificent look over the city below. It also seem to have been coming up out of the earth because of its material use was the same as the landscapes natural materials. I quickly realized that this place had more then meets the eye because i was finding myself getting lost in the size of it. Lost not in the sense of location but mentally lost in its beauty and very detailed spaces. This place will forever been in my memory for one of the most tranquil locations in the world.

Sagrada Familia
I traveled to the eastern part of Barcelona to find the Sagrada Familia with a very basic understand of its architect Antonio Gaudi, the size and details into the construction of it. As i entered its general location I kept getting quick glimpses of its spires, then i walked into a city parc with at the end of it stood the mighty Sagrada Familia. I never could have prepared myself for what was right in front of me, its large columns which were bent in such a may that felt as if magic was holding them in place. After i got into the surrounding area i noticed that the figures on the front here designed in a very interesting way....they are in a very block-like form which told the story of Jesus Christs Crucifixion. Even with the block like figures he still somehow got a very perfect expression on each of the faces in a way that you really felt the emotion that they were portraying. I entered into the building to have 3 over head mosaic windows throwing all colors of the spectrum on every thing that light could touch. As much as its beauty amazed me so did the incompleteness of it. As i got to the back of the Sagrada Familia I noticed how the figures on the exterior changed from the front. They were in the usual-typical form you would see on a church, while portraying the stories of the Birth Of Jesus Christ Nativity scenes. I am looking forward to coming back to Spain many years from now just to see the future design of the Sagrada Familia.

Fes "Take Everything, But Leave Nothing" (Pictures)

Morocco
<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; has been a place I never thought I would go. As I learned more about its culture and architecture I realize that this would be a trip that would change my perspective forever. Since returning to Barcelona from Fes I have learned that this is true, but not in the way I originally thought. I thought that it would be a dangerous place that would not have any respect for people coming in to there country and touring. In reality the life was much different, people seem to want to be around you if it was to bargain items or to just talk to you.

The weather was beautiful and the sights were amazing; as we took a tour bus to our dar my eyes were glued to the unique style of architecture that was appearing every direction I looked. Pulling up to our dar and bit of worry came over me because we were getting out in an area that at first glance seem to be a very run down area with a lot of locals surrounding us. This feeling finally subsided when i walked into our dar which seem to be more like a palace. The tile work and the hidden beauty of the space was more then i ever expected. Getting our rooms after a bit of mint tea seem to be the beginning of a fantastic frenzy as people started to run from room to room and balcony to balcony trying to get a hold on the building in a matter of minutes. We slowly calmed ourselves down and meet our tour guide for the next few days, Mo Mo...what a name! Later in our day we found out that he must have known 1 out of 10 people in the city which must have had a few million people in it and we quickly learned this when people would stop whatever they were doing just to say a few words to him and people in cars would slow down to do the same.

The next few days seem to be a blur of traveling down tight alleyways, seeing beautiful riads and dars, observing the design process of making pottery and fabrics, and getting into places that we wouldn't have been allowed without Mo Mo. 4 days into our trip we went to the Middle Atlas where i found what the meaning of life was...to feed and pet a monkey even though it got mad at me for petting it and I was smacked by it, but it was worth it, how many people can say they were smacked by a monkey....not many.

Thank You Morocco!!!!!!!

Taking Over Paris

Time seem to fly fast as the moment to departure for Paris came. I found myself running around to make my flight, but made it then to find my plane was delayed an hour...sadly. I arrived in Paris and then traveled to another local airport to pick-up my future partner in my Paris adventures. We got in late so we called it a night at got up early to a long day of sight seeing consisting of the Louvre, Cathedral of Notre Dame and the Pompidou. I wasn't very fond of its design when it comes to it surrounding because the other buildings were very traditional and then you find this very structural modern building that stands alone. If I was to see this building alone or in a more modern location i think i would have a different feeling toward it. It is very creative to turn the inside or even hidden structure into a exterior skin. In conclusion I like like the building a lot, but i don't like it with its surrounding elements.

The next day we woke up early to head to the Chateau in Versailles via train. This place was amazing and the size was like nothing i have ever experienced in my life. Not only that but then knowing that i was in the place where the King of France slept, walked around and did what kings do. The Hall of Mirrors was incredible and i found myself wanting to know everything i could about this place which until a few days earlier was a mystery to me. Many hours later he jump back on the train for the city of Paris to see the Eiffel Tower at night. I see why this is a structural engineers porn...its size is something so vast for its time of creation.

Our last day in Paris came fast and it was time to check out of our room and see the city for the last day. We adventured to the Arc de Triumph and decided that we had to see the Eiffel Tower during the day and it was a different as night and day. I saw it as more of this structural mass during the day but as this object of beauty during the night. Then my friend and I went our separate ways and back to Barcelona i went.

Homeless in London

Unintentionally my eye was caught by the homeless culture in Oxford. With the ability to speak English to them and really understand them i jumped on it. I approached a man on the streets, his name was Quinn. He had a dog with him as well, this was actually a normal thing for the homeless to have a dog with them, possibly because it gives them a companion that will be there to play and keep there spirits up when they want to be down. I have a dog at home and when it is hard for me to be around other people I always found comfort in playing and wrestling with him. When i approached Quinn he was selling magazines in a door way. He said that he can pick up this magazine at a local publisher and try and sell them and he gets to keep a profit of the money for himself. This was a real inspiring sight because it was a new sign of people helping people that i have never experienced in Barcelona or the States. He asked me to buy one to help him for the price of 10 pounds but i was in no position to buy something worth that much, but instead i gave him a few pounds for his time and his politeness. I went back to talk to my friend Sarah who is studying at Oxford for the semester and she confirmed saying the same thing. While talking to Quinn i found that the publisher was The Big Issue and its intended to be sold ONLY by the homeless. I went to the company to talk to them and it is actually written by professional journalist and was first started in 1991. For the rest of my time in England i would walk and see these people and Wow was all i could say about this great initiative.

Spring Break - Off to Austria y England (Pictures)

Austria

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Finally getting to Munich, Germany with my faithful companion Mateusz we new that the sights were going to be something we would never forget. After getting our luggage we had to find a way to get from the Munich Airport to the Munich Train station. We took a 55 Euro cab ride to arrive in the heart of Munich which was a very sexual, beer drinking country which was amazing! We calmly walk into the train station to get tickets to the small town of Innsbruck, Austria until we realized the next train left in 4 minutes. We grabbed our bag and ran as fast as we could to the gate until we realized we didn't know what gate it was because it wasn't displayed on the ticket. Unfortunitly missing that train and having to wait an hour and a half till the next one, but this became a blessing so that we could see more of the city and try out the world famous beer...Wow were the stories true, Germany beer is some of the best beer to have ever touched my lips. Sooner then we were hoping the next train came around and we were off to Innsbruck. Arriving 2 hours later in this little industrial town completely surrounding by mountains. This town was very unorganized and seemed like there was not urban architecture influence, which was sad because i felt like this town definitely had some potential to be great. Though it had the Olympics years earlier it still was not very tourist friendly to me. After this quick examination we jump on a tram and head up to the mountains to the very small 40 house town of Mutters. "Now this is a beautiful town", I said after getting off the tram and walking round to find our hotel. He get to the Sports Hotel and quickly settled down and then hit the town. The next few days would melt together consisting of snowboarding, beer drinking fun that would make this trip one to remember and love.

As quick as the trip came it left and i was back in Barcelona unpacking and repacking to go to the next location of my great Spring Break, Oxford, London. I got to Girona Airport late into the night for a 11pm flight to Luton, London. As I approach the city by plane, I started to see cars on the wrong side of the road and i quickly got excited and wanted to get off the plane at that moment. Finally touching down I go to get a bus ticket to Oxford, which was an hour long bus ride that would get me there at 3:20am. Getting off the bus I got a quick glimps of CUA when I saw my friends Sarah and Josh. Quickly jumping in bed to get up for a beautiful day in the city London. As i walked around with my camera attached to my face i was able to see the Westminster Abbey, Parliament, the Big Ben, Buckingham Palace and much much more. The next few days i felt like a hug tourist seeing everything i could in London and Oxford. I was able to get in to the castle where they filmed the Harry Potter movies and try some of the local goodies. I felt like Austria went by fast but it was nothing compared to how fast it went by in England. I put on my sad face and said my goodbyes and i was off to Barcelona to call my Spring Break a wrap.

Field Trip 1 - Southern Spain (Pictures)

Madrid<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; I was so moved by how they lived here compared to DC.

My feelings caused me to Fast for two reasons....first i wanted to know how it might feel to not have the freedom to eat to fuel my body and understand how this would affect my life in every aspect. As i walked by them i felt their pain just from looking at them and seeing how they lived. They would do things i would never do such as looking through the trash just to find anything they could, so with this i wanted to Fast, also, to take the money i would have spend on myself to eat and give it to them so that they would be able to. I Fasted from February 18th to February 22nd, which consisted of not eating from sun up to sun down. This type of Fast would give them money from my breakfast and lunch.

I must admit that it wasn't a easy thing to do. I would come and sit in studio and see others eat and think about it, but then i realized that is something homeless people so; they would walk the streets and see people in restaurants and would want to eat, but economically couldn't.

In my next two months in Barcelona i would like to take time out of my work and sight seeing to start to answer a few person questions of my own:
1) Why do the people chose certain places to sit to try and get money to live off of?
2) Why does it seem like there is a specific nationality to the people (Middle East)?
3) How do people react to them asking for money or just sitting there waiting for the money?
4) Why do some seem like its more of a scam then a censer asking?
5) Where they chose to sleep during different weather conditions?
6) What they seem to get out of the trash when they are looking?
7) What is the most common thing for them to find in the trash?
...and other questions that might build off of them.

Field Trip 1 - Southern Spain

Madrid:
Our first stop on our amazing trip was Madrid. We all were dead tired and had no idea what to expect from this trip. As we get of the plane my first reaction as that it was a lot colder then Barcelona since it didn't have the Mediterranean warm winds blowing on it. We check-in to our rooms then head to Plaza Mayor. We entered this grand plaza from a ascending street. It had a very unique style with 4 major towers rising up from the facades. I later found out that all the streets leading out of the plaza lead to some landmark around the city which if its true would be a very unique and appealing design. As we started to draw a marching band of men and women dressed in matching clothing; yellow hair wig, blue skirts, white blouses and red shoes. After our first sketch myself and a few fellow students stayed in Plaza Mayor to watch a street performer. He was daring I will give him that much; he climbed a light post until he noticed police officers started to come over to get him, so he ran into the crowd to finish his performance as the officers waited in the back till after his performance to get him. This first night a group of us went to a local oriental restaurant and then called it a night. The next day we woke to a very cold and rainy day which caused a lot of people to have a negative reaction toward the city if felt. We traveled around and saw an amazing park and I would have loved to stay in for hours and hours, but had to move on. We later traveled to the Prado and then we freely walked the city before heading the the hotel to get ready for an soon to be amazing time at a bar to watch the NFL Super Bowl live, congrats New York Giants!! Then it was off to our next location...Cordoba!

Cordoba:
We took a train, my first time on one, and arrived to a completely different life from anything I have ever known. The weather was beautiful and the city was small, but grand in my eyes.
As I got out of the cab an older women approached me with a piece of tree in her hand. Not knowing what to expect I just went along with it, but then found that she wanted to read my palm to get money in return. Luckily I had no money on me and got away from it with all my money and luggage. We got our rooms then were free for lunch, but Matteusz and I decided we were going to take a look around the town since we were only there for one night. Unfortunately we got lost and ended up walking at least 3 or 4 miles trying to get back. We arrived late, but jumped right into our next drawing assignment which was to sketch the inside and outside of the Mezquita. What a grand structure that was. It went through construction by 4 different rulers, but started by a 17 year old prince who's family was murdered. After that we relaxed until the real fun began...Arab Bath time! After a relaxing bath we all called it a night to wake up for our next stop on the Great Adventure...Granada!

Granada:
To get to Granada we took a 3 hour bus ride across beautiful terrain that seemed similar to a desert with mountains surrounding you. We arrived at the bus stop and cabbed over to our hotels. As we traveled through i wasn't sure what to expect, but little did I know there was beautiful and amazing sites around every corner. We walked to the Cathedral of the Annunciation then traveled into the old town for lunch. I ate a Spanish Omelet which consisted of potatoes and egg topped with sliced tomatoes and mayo...amazing! After eating we were given an assignment to get lost in the town and sketch something interesting to you. I walked around and came across this small lookout, but yet was unknowing to its grandness. I meet up with some people to return to this spot...wow...what a sign it was of the mighty Alhambra. We returned to meet up with the rest of our class to show what we did and to relax before our night time adventure back to the lookout which I discovered earlier to watch the sunset over the Alhambra. After experiencing the sunset and the personality of the town is when i realized that Granada was going to be my favorite city of the trip. The next day the class spend the majority of the day at the Alhambra looking around and learning about all the history it had. I was very moved by the beauty and the history and I never wanted to leave but I had to and as I descended the mountain Jesse and I went to look at art, we stopped for a quick yet relaxing drink in a local tea house and proceeded to walk around till we could by a fountain pen. Later in the night a large group of us went to a local bar/flamenco were we got a first hand experience with the musical life style of Spain. After we had an amazing time at the bar we returned to our room to sleep of the alcohol for our final destination....Seville!

Tres Weeks In...Still Going Strong!

Tomorrow the group leaves for Madrid and we are all so excited! This will be a great chance for me to see the major cities of Spain and see some amazing architecture with some great people. This trip is very life changing for me; I finally feel comfortable here and am excited for the months ahead. It has taken me awhile to get to this level, there has been ups and downs to this trip but I'm understanding that they are all part of this experience.

Our first project was presented yesterday. Eric and Christi made this jury very relaxing for us which is nice because as much as I like to dress up to present i feel that the relaxing attitude made me understand what is important in this trip. I feel so privileged to have Eric Jenkins and Christi Cole as our teacher, even though Christi is new to this kind of teaching, they both have so much to teach us and are great at what they do. I personally enjoy the drawing side of architecture and always looking to learn more and hope to perfect my technique.

I'm really enjoying this city. I have learn that it has a very old feeling for two reasons, one because it has old buildings and its very historic and two is that it is very behind on the same things that America has done like music, transportation, etc. I have been exposed to so many different American cities but i have never seen anything like Barcelona and I'm loving every minute of it. Though I'm missing friends and family a lot I have been trying to understand that need to enjoy this once in a life time opportunity. I finally got to say hello to my new niece told, one word..."WOW". She is beautiful and so small, I am so proud and luck to have the family that I do and this makes it much harder. Well its time for me to go and pack for the trip!!!!

Forum

Edificio Forum, Barcelona
-Amazing Model of the city of Barcelona
<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v13.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D0a08e578be9c4ae2%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329849406%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D26342485A1D487C1EDA855A1B0DA84DED5AE5DD0.3AA7538D7AE342883D5AECA29E72FFE637C822F6%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3Da08e578be9c4ae2%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DD_O8Cgs4f33jPvQNRcW1RVGmAko&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

Another Day....Yet Again!

We have just finished week one and what a week it was! I am starting to get around town a lot easier and my Spanish is progressing. We at a small jury today about our figure ground drawings and it was nice to see all the works in one place and learn about how old cities and new cities compare. PJ and I are working on our collage and I'm excited for how the project will come out, even though we have a lot of work ahead of us before its due. We are introducing a graffiti style with an architectural foreground.

The clubs around here are great compared to the ones back home. Very fancy with no sight of sketchy people :) just nice Spanish chicas. Also, the suite has decided to make a weekly event to see one of the 13 Antonio Gaudi buildings. His style is so crazy and unique, we have recently found out that the Sagrada Familia is going to have a speed train with a hub that goes directly underneath the massive structure. This seems to be a dangerous approach because the foundation is not very strong and could cause a lot of long term damage to it. This would be quite the sham because it isn't even close to being finished, yet it is already in the record books of Spanish architecture by Gaudi.

So I am officially an uncle now and I have seen little baby Bella and wow she is so so so beautiful!!! I am quickly starting to love this place. If its from the "compressed" life style the Spanish people have to walking around to explore to this being my first time out of the continental United States. I am nervous with a hint of excitement for the new and unknown adventures ahead. My roomies are very cool we have some amazing meals ever night while polishing off two bottles of wine...well they do most of the work i just try and help them out a little bit!

The language barrier is a little hard to get passed, but the people are very nice and helpful. Today we went to the Edifici Forum building its structure is unique and beautiful. The facades are covered with a blue textured foam and the it reminds me of a tree. It has a massive base with holds the main stair cases and utility rooms, also, while you stand under this tree-like structure there are gaps in it where you could see straight through to the sky. This design caught my eye quickly because in sophomore Spring studio I created a 2 week children's school in which I designed a library that was shaped like a glass cases tree. The other students and I watched a short video about the cities architectural history.

Over the last dew days we have had so very cool city projects one consisting of getting dropped off at a random stop. We were told to walk around the city while only following what our senses tell use to do, so if you like it quite you would want to stay in the quiet alleys or if a smell grabs you and pulls you in a direction, then you follow it. Another won was where we were taken to a plaza by our teacher and told to go in a specific direction and we would have to paint on black paper our path. The goal of this was to walk in that direction until we got to a smaller plaza; this was designed to make us look at the city and to understand scaling a walk of the city with just your steps.

It's night time in this beautiful city of Barcelona and I have been in studio for lone enough. Goodnight Blog....till another time!!!
